AI
Artificial intelligence
In short
AI is computer programs that do tasks we used to need a person for, such as writing text, answering questions and recognising images.
AI is an umbrella term, used for everything from the spam filter in your email to ChatGPT. When people say AI today, they usually mean tools that write, answer and summarise in plain language. The engine behind them is a language model. In Norwegian you will also see KI, short for kunstig intelligens. It means the same thing.
What AI is good and bad at
AI is quick at first drafts, summaries, translations and answers to questions it has been given material for. It is weaker on facts it does not have, and it rarely tells you when it is guessing. An answer can sound completely right and still be wrong. That is why a person should read through everything that goes out to customers.
For a small business, the gain is usually in the dull work: emails that resemble each other, texts that need rewriting, and questions that come up again and again. The last of these is what an AI chat on your website is built for.
Try it on a real task today
Take an email you answer almost every week. Remove names and other personal data, paste it into the free version of ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, and ask for a draft reply in your tone. Correct whatever you would have said differently. You will quickly see what the tool can take off your plate, and where it misses.
