There is a paradox in the AI revolution: the more content is produced automatically, the more valuable the human becomes.

We have written about this from a content perspective: that personal brand and named expertise matter more in an AI era. But it runs deeper than content strategy. It is about the foundation of business relationships.

What has actually changed?

Buyers, clients and collaborators have become accustomed to encountering AI. They know that emails may have been written by AI, that website content may be AI-generated, that responses from chatbots are not necessarily written by a person.

This has two effects:

The threshold is lower: people no longer expect everything to be hand-crafted by a human, and that is fine for routine communication.

The price of genuine is higher: a genuinely human meeting, a response clearly written with consideration, a recommendation from someone you know and trust, has become rarer and therefore more valuable.

Trust is not a branding project

It is tempting to think of trust as something you build with visual identity, a good website and regular blog posts. These things help. But trust is really built by actions over time.

Do you deliver what you promise? Do you communicate clearly when something goes wrong? Do you pick up the phone? Are you the professional clients think of when they need help with what you do, not because you are the biggest, but because you have shown yourself to be reliable?

That is the trust that converts. And it is the trust that retains clients over time, even when a cheaper competitor appears.

What does this mean for digital presence?

It means the human should shine through in the digital.

The website should show who you are. Not just what you do. Photos of real people, description of actual experience, case studies from real projects.

Content should have a clear human voice. Not necessarily personal in a storytelling sense, but not sterile and generic either.

Reviews and references are gold. Google Business Profile reviews, LinkedIn recommendations, testimonials on the website. It is others' trust confirming yours.

Fast and genuine responses to enquiries. In a world of automation, responding quickly and personally is a differentiating signal.

The opportunity

Business culture in many countries is built on trust. For SMBs it means the investment in building and demonstrating trust has a good foundation to rest on.

What is required is to make it visible: online, in communication, in content.
