"Vibe coding" is a term that started circulating in technology circles in early 2025. The core idea is simple: you describe what you want in natural language and an AI tool writes the code for you. You do not need to understand the code: you just need a clear idea of what you want to achieve.
Tools like Cursor, Windsurf, Replit Agent and Vercel v0 have made this accessible to far more people than just developers.
What is actually possible?
For simple websites and landing pages: Surprisingly much. A person with no technical background can now use AI tools to build a functional, visually attractive website in a few hours. What used to take a developer a day can now be done faster by a non-technical person with the right tool.
For e-commerce and interactive systems: More limited. It is possible to get far, but you quickly encounter problems that require code understanding to resolve. Debugging, security and integrations are still difficult without technical competence.
For complex web applications: Still demanding. Vibe coding is a good starting point but not a replacement for professional development of systems handling sensitive data, complex logic or large user bases.
What does this mean for an SMB?
It democratises certain types of website work. A small business can now create a simple landing page for a campaign without engaging a developer. That is real and useful.
But it does not solve the fundamental challenges:
Design and strategy are not replaced. An AI tool can build what you describe. It cannot help you think through what the page should do, who it is for and what actually converts visitors to customers.
Quality control is necessary. AI-generated code can have security issues, accessibility issues and SEO issues that are not visible to the naked eye. Someone who knows what to look for should review it.
Long-term maintenance can get complicated. A website built without code understanding can be difficult to update and debug over time.
Our assessment
Vibe coding is a useful addition to the toolkit for quick experiments, simple pages and rapid prototyping. It is not a replacement for considered, professional website strategy and development.
For SMBs the practical conclusion is: experiment freely with these tools for internal needs and prototypes. But have professionals involved when the website is business-critical.
