The internet is being flooded with AI-generated content. The volume of text produced daily is exploding, and much of it is accurate, well-written and completely generic.
In that context, something interesting is happening: human voice, named experience and clear personality are becoming more valuable, not less.
The problem with generic authority
Until now, many businesses have built visibility through a combination of SEO content, paid ads and a website that explains what they offer. It has worked.
The problem is that this type of content is now produced faster and cheaper by AI than by people. If your competitor can publish a hundred articles a month using AI tools, the volume strategy loses its value.
What AI cannot replicate: you. Your experience, your opinions, your mistakes and what you learned from them, your way of reading your industry.
What is a personal brand for an SMB owner?
It is not about becoming an influencer or sharing breakfast photos. It is about being visible and recognisable to the people who buy what you sell.
A personal brand is built when:
- People in your target market know who you are and what you think about things
- They associate you with a field or a type of problem-solving
- They think of you when they need what you offer, or know someone who does
- Your content is cited, shared or commented on by peers
It does not have to be large scale. It has to be the right scale.
LinkedIn is the starting point for most B2B businesses
We have written about the LinkedIn opportunity before. In 2023 the argument is stronger: organic reach is still high, AI-generated content has not yet flooded the platform, and decision-makers are there.
What works:
- Regular posts with concrete observations and opinions from your field
- Stories from projects: what happened, what did you learn?
- Clear points of view, not just neutral overviews
- Responding to comments in ways that build dialogue
It takes time. Those who start today are six months ahead of those who start in the autumn.
Newsletters are underrated in the Norwegian context
A regular newsletter to an engaged list (even a small one) is one of the most effective ways to build a personal brand. It is direct, it is owned and it does not depend on an algorithm.
Substack, Beehiiv and Mailchimp make it easy to get started. For Norwegian professionals and consultants this is particularly powerful because competition for attention in inboxes is far lower than on social media.
Podcast and video
Audio and video build trust faster than text because they convey personality directly. A business podcast does not need thousands of listeners to have value: a few hundred relevant listeners who recognise you and trust you is far more valuable than anonymous page views.
The strategic argument
In a world where AI makes it cheap to produce large volumes of content, the scarcity is no longer content: it is trust and recognisability from a specific human being.
Businesses that invest in making the founder's or team's voice visible now are building a competitive advantage that is hard to replicate.
