Pageview

In short

A pageview is one load of a page on your website in a browser. Someone who reads three pages produces three pageviews.

Pageviews are the simplest number in your statistics. Every time a page loads, it is counted. If the same person reloads the page, it is counted again. In Google Analytics 4 the metric is called Views, and Google states that a measurement is sent every time someone loads a page.

Three numbers that get mixed up

Pageviews, visits and visitors are not the same thing. Picture 300 visitors who together make 400 visits and view 1,000 pages. That is 1,000 pageviews divided by 400 visits, or 2.5 pageviews per visit. If you compare with last year, compare the same number.

More is not always better

Lots of pageviews can mean people are interested. It can also mean they are searching and not finding what they need. The number says nothing about whether anyone got in touch. Measure conversions instead, and use pageviews to see which pages get attention. Remember too that the numbers are almost always lower than reality, because many people say no in the consent banner and some use ad blockers.

Open the pages report in Google Analytics or whichever tool you use. Look at the ten most visited pages. Are the pages that make you money among them? If not, you know where to add more links.
