We have written about social media as rented land. We have written about AI Overviews changing search traffic. In the middle of all this uncertainty, there is one digital channel that has been quietly becoming more valuable, not less: email.

Not necessarily bulk promotional email. But a regular, genuine newsletter to people who have chosen to hear from you.

Why email is different

Email is an owned channel. Your subscriber list belongs to you. No algorithm decides who sees it. No platform can change your reach overnight. No vendor can take it away.

That is the fundamental difference from social media, and it is the most important reason to build it.

Open rates for email are typically 20–40 percent for B2B newsletters aimed at professionals and decision-makers. Organic reach on LinkedIn is 3–10 percent. On Facebook far lower. Email reaches people more reliably.

The newsletter economy is growing globally

Substack, Beehiiv and Ghost have made it easy for individuals and businesses to publish paid and free newsletters. In the US, the "newsletter economy" is a well-established concept: professionals building direct subscriber relationships without intermediaries.

In many markets this is underdeveloped. That means opportunity. For an SMB sending a valuable weekly or monthly newsletter to its industry, competition for the inbox is low.

What makes a good B2B newsletter?

It is useful, not promotional. The best newsletter gives the recipient something they can use: an insight, an observation, a useful tool, a concrete recommendation.

It is regular. Once a month is enough for many SMBs. The point is consistency, not frequency.

It is human. Write as a person to a person. Not as a company to a recipient. Personal perspective and genuine opinions build trust.

It leads somewhere. Not necessarily to a sale, but perhaps to an article, an invitation to get in touch, or a concrete action.

Get started without overthinking it

You do not need a professional newsletter design or an advanced tool to start. Mailchimp has a free plan up to 500 subscribers. Beehiiv and Substack are easy to set up in under an hour.

The hardest part is starting. The second hardest part is continuing.

Start with your existing clients. Ask if they want to hear from you monthly. Write the first issue about something you have learned this quarter. Send it. Repeat.
