Meta description

In short

The meta description is a short text in the code that sums up the page. Google may show it below the title in the search result.

The meta description is written in a separate field, usually right below the field for the title tag in Wix and in SEO plugins for WordPress. It does not show on the page itself. It is a small advert for the page, placed where people choose what to click.

Why it matters to you

A description that answers what people are wondering and says what they get gives them a reason to choose you over the link next door. One that only repeats the company name does not.

Be prepared for Google to choose for itself quite often. According to Google Search Central, the text in the search result is created mainly from the content on the page, and the meta description is used when Google thinks it describes the page better. That is why it also pays for the first paragraphs on the page to be clear.

What you can do today

Go through your five most important pages. Write a separate meta description for each one, a couple of sentences about what the page offers and who it is for. If you have access to edit the website, add them yourself. If not, send them to whoever runs it. Google gives no length limit, but the text is cut when it does not fit, so get the most important part in early. Check CTR for the pages in Google Search Console after a few weeks.
