Featured snippet

The box shows a paragraph, a list or a table taken from a web page, with a link to the source. It is also called position zero, because it sits above first place. Click it, and you are often taken straight to that paragraph on the page.

You cannot book the spot

Google states that its own systems decide whether a page works as a snippet. There is no code that turns your page into a featured snippet. What you can do is write an answer that is easy to lift out.

Visibility or clicks

The spot gives a lot of visibility, but not always visits. If the answer is complete in the box, people have no need to click. That is called a zero-click search. You gain the most when the question leads further, like "what does it cost to replace a roof", where the answer is "it depends" and the details are on your site.

Write down a question customers often ask. Search for it on Google in a private window and see what sits at the top. Then make a page with the question as the heading and a direct answer in the first two sentences, with the details below. We have written more about this in Position zero.
