Since ChatGPT launched in November 2022, it has been the dominant reference for "AI" in most business environments. But it is no longer the only alternative worth knowing. Here is what Anthropic is, what Claude is, and why it is relevant for you.

Who is Anthropic?

Anthropic was founded in 2021 by Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei, along with a group of researchers who came from OpenAI. The motivation for starting the company was a conviction that AI safety and responsible development of powerful AI systems had to be central, not an afterthought, but the core of the business.

The company is known for the concept of "Constitutional AI": an approach where AI systems are trained to follow a set of principles and evaluate their own responses against these principles. The result is a model designed to be helpful, harmless and honest.

What is Claude?

Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant: equivalent to ChatGPT from OpenAI, Gemini from Google and Copilot from Microsoft. It is available via claude.ai and through an API for developers.

What sets Claude apart in practice:

Longer context window. Claude can handle very long documents and conversations without losing the thread. That means you can paste in a long report, a contract or a complex document and ask questions about the entire content.

Writing quality and nuance. We find that Claude writes more naturally and with more nuance than most competitors. For those producing professional content in English or other languages, this is not insignificant.
