On 17 February, Search Engine Journal reported that Google is testing more prominent link icons and previews in AI Overviews and AI Mode on desktop. It is an important signal at a time when many treat zero-click search as though all clicks have disappeared for good.
They have not. They have become more selective.
When Google delivers an AI answer directly in search results, some users stop there. But those who click through do so because they need more: a deeper explanation, an original source, a supplier to evaluate, or enough confidence to get in touch. That click is far more qualified than a random organic visit ever was.
Source-worthy content has a different shape
To be cited or clicked from AI search, your content needs to be easy to use as a source. That sets concrete requirements:
- Clear claims with context, not generic statements
- Examples from practice that demonstrate real experience
- Clean structure that makes it easy to scan
- Up-to-date information that has not gone stale
- A credible author with visible expertise
- Links between related topics that build topical authority
An article that concludes "SEO is important for businesses" adds nothing. An article that shows how an SMB should prioritise technical SEO, content and measurement after a Google update is far more useful, and far more likely to be cited.
Do not optimise for AI alone
It is tempting to engineer all content for AI citation. But content that only tries to satisfy systems loses its voice and quickly feels artificial.
The goal is content that is genuinely useful for people and easy to interpret for machines. That is not a contradiction: it is the same standard expressed two ways.
A service page about web design should explain who the service is for, what the process involves, what decisions the client needs to make, and what happens after launch. That helps the customer make a decision. It also gives AI systems a solid basis for understanding and referencing the service.
Clicks must be earned
AI search does not remove the need for good websites. It raises the bar.
When the user has already received a brief answer in Google, your website needs to deliver something more: depth, context and a clear path forward. Businesses that build content for decision (not just for visibility) are the ones that win the qualified clicks.
