In short
llms.txt is a proposed text file at the root of a website that gives AI tools a short overview of what the site is about and where the content is.
The file sits at the address yourdomain.no/llms.txt. It is written in Markdown, which is plain text with a little simple formatting. The content is a short introduction to the website and a list of links to the most important pages, ideally with a sentence about each.
A proposal, not a rule
llms.txt was proposed by Jeremy Howard in September 2024. It is a proposal for a shared practice, not a standard the search engines have committed to. Google writes that you do not need new machine-readable files or special AI text files to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. So the file gives no guarantee of visibility in AI search.
We still have one on ibenta.no, along with clean Markdown copies of our articles. It costs little to make, and it makes the content easy to read for tools that look for it.
Check your own
Type your website's address followed by /llms.txt in the browser. If you get an error page, you do not have one. If you want to make one, the format is described on llmstxt.org. Put it up yourself if you have access to the files on the server, or send it to whoever runs the website. More important than the file is that the pages it points to clearly answer what customers want to know.
