Since the Google Helpful Content Update (HCU) hit in September 2022 and again in 2023, the SEO industry has debated what it actually means. We now have enough data to see patterns.

What HCU actually targets

Google's goal with the update was clear: down-rank content written for search engines, not for people. That means content that:

  • Tries to cover every variant of a keyword without saying anything substantial
  • Repeats itself across many paragraphs without adding new information
  • Has no visible experience or professional grounding behind it
  • Exists primarily because someone wanted more content on their website

This is content that has been part of many SEO strategies for years. HCU said it no longer holds up.

Who was hit hardest?

The clearest losers have been:

  • Niche sites with hundreds of thin SEO articles
  • Websites with bought content and no editorial control
  • Websites with large amounts of AI-generated text without human reworking
  • Aggregator sites collecting others' content without adding anything of their own

Websites that were rewarded: those with clear professional identity, named authors, original insight and content that actually answers questions rather than appearing to.

What surprised many: site-level signals

An important lesson from HCU is that Google evaluates the entire website, not just the individual page. That means a lot of low-quality content in one area of the domain can affect the trust of other pages.

For SMBs the implication is simple: twenty good blog posts are better than two hundred mediocre ones.

What this means in practice

Stop publishing for publishing's sake. If you have nothing genuine to say about a topic, it is better not to write about it.

Make existing content better, not more. Many businesses have blog sections filled with content that never generated traffic and never found readers. Review it. Delete what does not hold up. Update what can be saved.

Show who has written it. A simple author biography with professional background and experience is a clear E-E-A-T signal.

Write about what you actually know. The best SEO strategy for an SMB in 2024 is to write deeply and honestly about your field, from your own perspective. It is neither fancy nor complicated, but it is effective.

HCU is not a punishment against legitimate businesses. It is an internet cleanup. Those who have always focused on quality over volume barely notice it.
