SEO comes down to three things. The content has to answer what people actually search for. The technical side has to make it easy for Google to read and understand the site. And other websites have to link to you, because that is a sign you can be trusted.

## Why it matters to you

Traffic from SEO costs nothing per click. Once a page ranks, it can bring in customers for months without you doing anything more. The downside is that it takes time. A new page often spends several months climbing, and no serious provider can promise you a specific position.

For a local business, the gain is often biggest close to home. People searching "plumber Bærum" are about to buy, and then [local SEO](/en/glossary/local-seo) and an up-to-date [Google Business Profile](/en/glossary/google-business-profile) help more than a blog post about the history of plumbing.

## What you can do today

Write down the five services you earn the most from. Check that each one has its own page with a clear heading that names the service and the place. If you want a basic overview, we have written a [simple introduction to SEO](/en/docs/seo-basics).
