# Page speed

Page speed is how quickly your website loads and becomes ready to use. It shows most on a phone with poor coverage.

Speed is several things at once: how long it takes before anything appears, when the main content is in place, and how quickly the page responds when you tap. Google measures this with [Core Web Vitals](/en/glossary/core-web-vitals). The usual culprits are large images, lots of WordPress plugins, heavy third-party scripts and slow [hosting](/en/glossary/hosting).

## What a slow page costs

A slow page costs visits you never see. Someone staring at a white screen presses back and picks the next result. It does not arrive as a complaint, only as fewer enquiries.

Speed is also part of what Google looks at. But Google itself says it will show the most relevant content even when the page experience is mediocre. A good answer to the search counts most, and a fast page helps when several answers are equally good.

## How to measure your own

Go to pagespeed.web.dev and paste in the address of your front page. It is free. Look at the mobile result first, and scroll down to the suggestions. If something there mentions images, that is often the easiest win. You can take it yourself, by saving images at a smaller size before you upload them.
