# Domain

A domain is your website's address, like yourcompany.no. You subscribe to it through a registrar and must renew it to keep it.

The domain is also what comes after the @ in your email address. For .no domains, the registry is run by Norid, but you do not register directly with them. You go through a registrar, such as your web host or your agency. A business needs an organisation number and a Norwegian postal address to get a .no domain.

## Why it matters to you

The domain is one of the few things online you should own outright. If it is registered to a former web designer or an employee who has left, you can be locked out the day something needs changing. If it is not renewed, both your website and your email can stop working.

The domain does not point to a server by itself. That is the job of [DNS](/en/glossary/dns), which tells the rest of the internet where your website and email live.

## How to check yours

Look up your domain in the domain lookup on norid.no. There you can see who the domain is registered to, and which registrar manages it. If your business is listed, all is well.
